Kerr represents GB in Geneva

Cameron competed in the Under 20’s category of The European Triathlon Championships in 26 degree heat on Friday, he completed a 750 metre swim in lake Geneva exiting an impressive 17th, following a smooth transition he set out on his 20k cycle at a good pace.

The cycle course around Geneva had very fast sections but did include a challenging steep climb. Kerr finished the race with his 5 km run achieving a total finishing time of 1 hour 14minutes and placed 27th position overall. The field consisted of top athletes from eight different European countries including a very strong home presence for the Swiss team coming first and third.

Cameron qualified for the European Championships in May last year following an impressive result at Nottingham aged 15.

Cameron trains and competes for Discovery Tri Club and Halstead Swimming Club and gets his bike serviced by Lobbs of Halstead.

Kerr Impresses on National Stage!

Sunday 6th September saw Abbie Kerr compete in the National Triathlon Championships at Mallory Park, Leicestershire.

This event saw Abbie compete alongside the countries finest 13/14 year old Triathletes, Abbie being among the few 13 year olds qualified, a high placing was not expected.

Her race consisted of a 350 metre open water swim, 7.7km cycle finishing with a 2.6km run.

The open water swim began with the usual ruckus, Abbie was swam over and her legs pulled, seeing her exit the lake in 27th position, once on the bike she quickly worked in tandem with her regional team mate Helena Dyce and between them they worked together to climb through the field finishing the cycle in 18th place.

Once out on the run this is where Abbie excelled, pushing her way to her finishing position of 9th.

Abbie’s overall finishing time of 33.16 was only 1 minute and 23 seconds behind the winner.

Abbie Kerr attends Hedingham school, Discovery Tri Club, Halstead Swim Club and Braintree Athletics Club.

After such a good run, Abbie is now looking forward to her winter training of cross country.

Oliver Swallow World Championships Hyde Park

Following fourth in the European championships in Turkey I qualified at Bristol Triathlon to compete in the World Championships in Hyde Park. I then had two great races at the Virgin tri where I came 3rd and Eton Super series where I came 2nd. This was great preparation for the Worlds and these results and others throughout the year have placed me in 8th in the country in the British super series league.

The world Champs was slightly different as I was competing in the under 20yr age Group team, where I had to do double the distance to my normal age group in the super series events. I was the youngest member of the GB squad and was asked to be the flag bearer in the opening ceremony at Trafalgar square. This was fantastic as I was with lots of my team mates from Turkey and It was a great opportunity and a privilege to be asked.

The race was on a wet and cold morning and this made conditions very tough. I was pleased with my swim although I came out in the top third, I then pulled back on the bike to about 15th. The bike was extremely technical due to the wet conditions. I had a difficult run as I had stitch the whole way round which was disappointing as I normally have a strong run and finish. I came 24th overall which is a great achievement as I still have 4 more years in this age group.

I am very excited about next season and look forward to training with my team mates at Braintree Velo, Chelmsford athletics, Discovery Tri and Halstead swim club, over the winter months.

World Triathlon Championships 2013 – London

The build up to the Worlds Triathlon Championships in Hyde Park,  was an exciting and incredible experience.   the Opening Ceremony in Trafalgar Square was great fun and although Wet and cold the atmosphere was amazing.  It was great meeting up with TeamGB friends that I had made at the European Championships in Turkey once again, on home ground in Hyde Park, London.

Having been advised to withdraw, from the Worlds Aquathlon Championships due to recovering from illness, I was really looking forward to the Worlds triathlon with my teammates from Discovery Tri, Oliver, Clover and Arran.  Thursday was a very busy day with registration, team briefings, team photo, sorting out numbers and racking the bike etc.  remembering to hydrate and eat well ready for the race the next day.  Friday ‘race day’ morning was pretty wet and cold and after a final check on my bike, attaching my shoes to the pedals etc I was ready.  The swim set off at 8.05 and although not a great swim time for me, I felt relaxed and reasonably strong, I came out of the water 18th in my wave.  I ran out of transition jumped on the bike and quickly slid my feet into my shoes with no problems.  Everything was coming together, I was closing in on a couple of girls that had come out before me on the swim.  At the top end of the course I decided to quickly overtake two competitors.   Unfortunately as I was picking up speed to overtake, two pedestrians decided to run across the track at the crossing point behind the marshalls back, I then went straight into one of them and crashed out.  I was absolutely devastated.  I wanted to get back on the bike and carry on but the medics saw I had a lump on my head and wouldn’t let me get on for at least 10 minutes.  My Worlds Championships was over.  The fact that it was not my fault is even more frustrating.  The GB mechanics managed to fix up my bike which had suffered damage to the brakes, handlebars and the rear mech hanger needs replaced but all in all, it could have been a lot worse for both myself and the bike.

However, looking back on my first year in triathlon, I feel that I have achieved and learnt so much, in such a short space of time.  I really enjoy competing in triathlon, and  have made some great friends from all over the country.    I have qualified for TeamGB U20 squad, 2014 European Triathlon Championships in Austria, so my focus will be training hard and building on my  increasing  confidence with the help of Wendy and her team at Discovery Tri for the 2014 triathlon season.

Well another Triathlon season comes to an end and what a season it has been for me. The season did not start well with me coming off my bike and fracturing the radius in my left elbow, which put me out of action for six weeks and jeopardised my chances of competing for the GB Team in the AG European Championships being held in Turkey. It became a race against time to get myself fit. Luckily I just made it, but it was touch and go and with little opportunity to test my race fitness I set off for Turkey  with some trepidation, not knowing how I would hold out. AS it turned out it was a fantastic experience. It was by far the biggest event I had ever taken part in and boy did I enjoy the experience. The camaraderie was amazing and I now have a great bunch of  new friends from across the UK.

In the race itself I finished 6th in my age group and was really pleased with my swim and run, but the bike let me down somewhat and that has become a recurring theme throughout my season, so guess what  I’ll be concentrating on this winter!

My next big race was the AG World Championship qualifier in Lludididino, Wales. The event turned out to be a bit of a reunion with a number of my mates from Turkey also competing in the race. The race went well, apart from being stung during the swim by a jelly fish, boy it was painful, but I still qualified for the AG World Championships to be held in London.

Just prior to the World Championships I had trials for the Eastern Region Academy, which consisted of a 400m swim followed by a 3,000m run. Both went well and I was selected for the Academy.

Then the climax to my season the World Championships arrived on Friday 13th September. Here again I met up with all my old mates. Having thought the European Championships was big it was nothing compared to the Worlds. There were 5,000 athletes taking part from eighty different countries. In my race there were 90 competitors. Overall I finished 44th. I was really pleased with my swim I was 16th out the water.

So overall a satisfying season and roll on next season.
